Over the last number of years Digital Humanities projects such as the Virtual Record Treasury (virtualtreasury.ie) have attempted to provide user interfaces for public users to engage with the historical resources that are being digitised at speed and at scale. The focus has primarily been placed on enabling this engagement through website organisation (themes, collections etc.), keyword searches, knowledge graph presentation of people, places and events, and interlinking of the KG with the source historical resources.
Although the numbers related to user interaction would indicate that these approaches are being successful, with the increasing improvement of speech technologies, emergence of chatbots, increased demand for more user driven analytics over data, there is an opportunity in proposing a project that interests you, to progress research into user interface development with engaging data and a diverse user base, and/or explore novel approaches for digital humanities applications.
