Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) can expose users to a range of systemic risks including illegal content, discrimination, harmful content, and manipulation of civic discourse and electoral process. In this project, you will design and run emulated users on the opposite ends of the same interest spectrums (political, social, health) to understand the prevalence of systemic risks on VLOPs such as Facebook, Google Discover. You will analyse and compare systemic risks such as:
- Illegal content: Illegal products, services and activities; Illegal hate speech and the incitement of hate crimes; Intellectual property (“IP”) rights violations
- Negative effects on fundamental rights: Right to freedom of expression and information; Non-discrimination; Consumer protection
- Negative effects on civic discourse, electoral processes, and public security
- Gender-based violence, negative effects on public health
