Several qualitative research methodologies involve analysis of data such as interview transcripts and open questionnaire responses. For example, several forms of analysis involve coding of the transcripts and then identifying common patterns and themes within the codes. There are potential benefits as well as risks associated with the use of AI tools to support such analysis. The project would investigate different ways of designing the interfaces to such tools in order to explore ways of mitigating these risks. This project would suit a student interested in a stronger research component to their project; some level of prototyping would also be required.
Some background in HCI (such as the 4th year HCI module) would be necessary. To develop an idea of what this project will involve, we suggest interested students do some preliminary reading around qualitative research. A good starting point is the textbook “Successful Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide for Beginners” (Braun and Clarke, 2013) which provides a good introduction to qualitative research. During the project, the student will need to engage with texts focusing on specific methods:
- Thematic Analysis: A Practical Guide (Braun and Clarke, 2021)
- Basics of Qualitative Research: Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory (Corbin and Strauss). [3rd or 4th Edition]
- Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology: Klaus Kripendorff
