Re-imaging the world through AR

Most augmented and mixed reality applications involve adding virtual foreground objects to the real world; in this project, we look at a converse of this problem: can we change the appearance of background objects and the environment when viewed through an augmented/mixed reality lens?

For instance:

  • subtly adapting colours to change contrast and saliency of parts of the environment
  • subtly enhancing features such as edges or applying real-time stylization to create art-like effects
  • adding fake lights, shadows and shading to control the mood, saliency or clarity of the environment
  • embedding virtual background objects in the environment, such as virtual windows in real walls
  • inserting a dynamic background environment overlaid on a wall

THIS PROJECT IS SUITABLE FOR: This project is ideally for a 4th year final year project. It may be taken up by Masters/MSc student but a deeper research contribution would be expected i.e. you will have to propose a novel contribution to knowledge that will be explored, beyond just implementing a demo.

PRE-REQUISITES: You should have taken or be taking modules in Computer Graphics, Computer Vision and Augmented Reality. It would be beneficial to have prior knowledge of 3D graphics, or use of graphics engines such as Unity 3D.
